Alumnus George Franks (Cornwallis, 1981) returned to RHS over Summer Reunion Weekend not only to document that event, but also to share his professional expertise by leading a hands-on sports photography masterclass at Sports Day on Sunday afternoon.
George is a professional photographer working with Pro Sport Images and Lancashire Cricket Club. He has travelled the world capturing iconic moments for England Cricket and Premier League football teams, making him the perfect person to give aspiring young photographers the opportunity to learn from him and see what it takes to be a professional sports photographer.
During the masterclass, pupils had the chance to use George’s own photography equipment and learn valuable techniques for capturing dynamic action shots. From freezing a moment of movement to framing fast-paced sports scenes, George guided students through the creative and technical aspects of sports photography.
The experience continued into Monday morning, when pupils took part in a post-production session. Here, they explored editing techniques and learned how to refine their images, developing not just their technical skills but also their creative confidence.
“I had the pleasure of passing on some of my photographic knowledge to some pupils at RHS, from where I got my passion for photography,” said George. “They all did an amazing job, and we had a lot of fun shooting and editing the pictures.”
The opportunity to learn from an RHS alumnus working in the sports photography industry left a lasting impression on the pupils. We are incredibly grateful to George for returning to share his talent and time, and for inspiring the next generation of photographers. Thank you, George!
