National Seafarers Service

National Seafarers Service

Our Chapel Choir had the honour of playing a leading role at the prestigious Annual National Service for Seafarers, held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday 9 October. This service, which has been a tradition since 1905, celebrates and commemorates the work and sacrifices of seafarers, past and present. The event draws together representatives from the Royal and Merchant Navies, maritime organisations, shipping companies, veteran associations, and educational institutions, all gathering to honour those who serve at sea.

This years’ service was particularly special for us, as our choir, led by Director of Music, Mr Allen, was selected as the host choir. Over 50 talented singers from RHS performed alongside choir members from Pangbourne College, The Royal School, and The London Nautical School. The musical contributions added great solemnity and reverence to the occasion, with the choir performing 'Greater love hath no man' by John Ireland and ‘So they gave their bodies to the commonwealth’ by Peter Aston, which resonated deeply with the congregation.

The service, attended by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, saw our pupils also taking part as flag bearers and readers. Being the lead school in such a historic and meaningful ceremony reflects our deep-rooted maritime heritage and our commitment to fostering musical excellence.

Reflecting on the event, Mr Allen, said: “It was an immense privilege for our choir to lead the music for such an important service. The pupils rose to the occasion, delivering performances that were both poignant and powerful, honouring the seafarers to whom we owe so much.”

The Annual National Service for Seafarers continues to be a key event in the maritime calendar, and our involvement further strengthens its ties to this sector. As a school that has a proud maritime history, being invited to lead this event is a testament to the talent, dedication, and professionalism of our pupils and staff.
