Musical Success

Musical Success

Beau, a Year 11 pupil and multi-instrumentalist Music Scholar at RHS, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming the youngest musician selected for the National Youth Jazz Collective (NYJC) Summer Short Course 2024. At just 15 years old, Beau impressed the audition panel at the Royal Academy of Music, earning his place among 27 talented young jazz musicians from across the UK.

Beau's success is particularly remarkable given the rigorous nature of the audition process. Reflecting on the experience, he shared: “It was the hardest audition I have experienced.” The challenge was further compounded by the timing, as the audition coincided with his Year 10 GCSE mock exams and the added complexity of managing his dyslexia. Despite these obstacles, Beau excelled, receiving high praise from Issie Barratt, the Founding Executive Artistic Director of NYJC.

In her letter to Beau, Barratt wrote: “It was great to meet you and wonderful to hear you play – what a treat! The audition panel recognised your clear commitment to the idiom and identified that you are already an accomplished instrumentalist.”

Beau’s musical journey began at an early age. He started playing the saxophone at the age of eight, building on a solid foundation established during his time at Junior Guildhall, where he studied violin and piano. Now, as a Music Scholar at RHS, Beau continues to hone his craft with the dedicated guidance of his teachers, including Mr Wybrow, who played a pivotal role in preparing him for the NYJC audition.

The RHS Music School has been a cornerstone of Beau's musical development. “Being a Music Scholar at RHS means so much to me. Not only do I have access to an outstanding Music School and wonderful teachers, but I also benefit from incredible support and opportunities both inside and outside of school. Mr Allen and Mr Martineau are always encouraging me and celebrating my performances,” Beau shared.

Beau has a profound passion for jazz, which he describes as a genre that offers unparalleled freedom and creativity in expression. Reflecting on his experience at the NYJC Summer Short Course, he highlighted the camaraderie among talented young musicians and the inspiration provided by world-class mentors. “The best part was learning from such incredible teachers and playing alongside other talented musicians,” he said.

Beau’s achievements are a testament to his talent, dedication, and perseverance. With aspirations to continue his musical journey by studying A Level Music, Beau serves as an inspiration to his peers and a shining example of what can be achieved through passion and hard work.

Congratulations, Beau!
