MUNCH

Our pupils attended the MUN conference ‘MUNCH’ (Model United Nations Cheadle Hulme) in Manchester at the beginning of the month. Topics such as tectonic plates colliding causing a mass continent to be formed and even implementing a purge was discussed and voted on.

Mrs Routledge, Director of MUN at RHS, said “MUNCH was our first residential MUN trip since Covid and it was really lovely to be able take our delegates to experience the joys of the Northwest, particularly the culinary ones! As a new generation of MUNers, for many this was their first experience of attending a conference and I was delighted to see how involved everyone got in their committees, proposing amendments, giving and taking points of information and speaking for and against resolutions. A special congratulations to Charles M-C for winning the prize of highly commended delegate and to Henry S for his special mention; they were very well deserved, and I look forward to seeing everyone progress across the upcoming debates and conferences!

Report by Tilly J and Lex A

“The first day everyone was split into their committees; Tilly represented Haiti in the Special Committee (SPECCOM) in which the topics of Transgender rights, racial and gender representation in the police force and the right to education of Indigenous people were addressed. These were interesting topics to research, particularly looking into gender equality in the Haitian police force and in Haiti in general, where women are still exposed to gender-based violence.

Other committee rooms debated the topics of Child Soldiers, Period Poverty, the Legal Age for Marriage, Population Control, Human Rights Violations in Refugee Camps and the Rights of Unborn Children and their Mothers. This final topic was particularly poignant following the speech at the opening ceremony by a former MUNCH Secretary General, who talked about the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade in the USA and what this would mean for her as an obstetrician if the same laws were in place in the U.K.

The more heated debates started on the second day during the forums in which the crisis of the tectonic plates colliding into each other, causing a mass continent to be formed was discussed. This was where delegates started to think a bit more “outside of the box” with amendments such as blocking volcanoes with large corks or starting a purge for the last six hours of human life on Earth were voted on. The day ended with some wise words by the Headmaster of Cheadle Hulme and a successful journey home with lots of “Instachats” and “Snapgrams” from our new friends.

We would like to congratulate Charles Maloney-Charlton for winning the prize of highly commended delegate and to Henry Shadrack for his special mention. On behalf of the delegates, we would like to thank Mrs Routledge and Mr Johnson for planning and taking us to the MUNCH conference in Manchester.”
