ROYMUN Conference Weekend 2022

RHS hosted its own Model United Nations Conference (ROYMUN) last weekend, which included a dinner on the Friday evening followed by two days of conference. Pupils from RHS, Alleyn’s, Felsted and Cheadle Hulme schools all attended.

On the Friday evening, after a four-course meal and socialising, a crisis was announced that RHS had been invaded by flesh-eating zombies! Different RHS departments were tasked to find a resolution using tools at the school’s disposal. Many suggested using supplies from the Chemistry Department e.g., hydrochloric acid and the PE Department such as cricket bats; whereas the English Department suggested poetry referencing the famous Berlin Wall speech from President Kennedy, this time instead quoting ‘ich bin ein zombie!’

For the conference weekend, delegates were allocated to a selection of five committees including security, human rights and UNOOSA (The Office of Outer Space Affairs). Each of the committees focused on specific topics, from the question of vigilante justice to whether space should be militarised. On the lead up to the conference delegates are provided a country where they must research their countries and provide a policy statement, in addition to resolutions to other policies. Prior to starting to debate informal lobbying took place allowing delegates to sign resolutions which their country agrees with.

On the final day of the conference another crisis, ‘Miracle Day’, was announced which the different committees needed to solve; this prompted much thought and a variety of abstract proposals. A closing ceremony took place in the afternoon where awards were presented to the best delegates from each committee.

Congratulations must go to Lex A, Hebe M, Sam G, Daniil D, Tony A, Luca B, Henry W, Tilly J, Bella P, Ema M and Tomi O, who all won either commended or highly commended delegate in their committee rooms.

Ayoola O and Toby C, representatives and committee chairs, said, ‘Overall it was an incredibly successful weekend, and we would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Routledge for all the work she put in to make it such an enjoyable conference.’
