George Newland secures degree apprenticeship programme in Construction Management

George Newland achieved an impressive two Distinction starred grades and a Distinction in his BTEC qualifications, at the same time as securing a degree apprenticeship programme in Construction Management with the MACE Group. The MACE Group is a global construction and consultancy company and George will start with them in September, whilst studying with the University College of Estate Management, London. A weekly boarder from London, George joined RHS in the Sixth Form, taking a double BTEC in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (worth the equivalent of two A Levels) and a BTEC in Media.

“I chose this route as I have always been interested in building and construction and I wanted to learn alongside gaining practical working skills. I will be joining the Head Office as a Project Management Assistant in their Central Government Team and will be involved in projects such as renovating the Houses of Parliament. I am really looking forward to using the organisation and interpersonal skills that I have gained whilst at RHS.”

George attended a 'Careers in Construction' event with Mace (online as it was during lockdown) when he was in the Lower Sixth which allowed him to be identified by Mace as a potential apprentice and to become part of their 'Emerging Talent' programme. He then had to attend a day of interviews and team exercises before being selected for the Degree Apprenticeship Programme.

“My greatest achievement whilst at RHS was completing the Devizes to Westminster International Kayak race earlier this year, where we won the CCF team event and were the fastest youth Canadian Canoe team. I also really enjoyed boarding at school and all the great friendships I have made during my time at RHS.”

If you are proud of your results and are happy to share how they've helped you achieve your next step in life we'd love to hear from you. Please email Sophy Walker (swalker@royalhospitalschool.org) with a photo and tell us a little about what you have achieved, where you're going next and how RHS has helped you get there.
