History Trip Report by Thomas G
This year our history pupils visited Belin during the Easter break, which saw them explore Berlin’s historical landmarks. The group of 24 pupils as well as 3 teachers from the history department had an action packed 4 days, which saw them explore everything from Sachsenhausen concentration camp to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which consists of 2,711 concrete slabs.
It was an early start on the first day and upon landing, the group were taken on a tour of Berlin by a friendly German tour guide- Nickolai. There was also a mix of several other tours and general explorations of many of the city's monuments, such as visits to the Allied, German Spy, Cold War and DDR Museums; the East Side Gallery; the Stasi Prison; and a walking tour and a walk along the remaining parts of the Berlin wall. These were accompanied by dinners each night, all topped off with a trip up to the top of the TV tower, giving a panorama of the city late in the evening.
Overall, the trip was an amazing experience which allowed for A-level pupils to learn about both life under Nazi-Germany as well as what it was like to live on either side of the Berlin wall before its collapse in 1989.
“Very well executed trip in which there was so many very powerful and humbling experience for all of us.”
