Busy summer for one of school's top sailors

One of the school’s top sailors, Zofia Moritz, Year 11, has had a very busy summer sailing around Europe in varying Laser competitions.

July started with the Laser Europa Cup in Dziwn, Poland, on the Baltic sea. In very strong winds (up to 30 knots) and waves, Zofia was placed 2nd girl and 10th overall at the start. However, exhaustion took its toll and, together with some lighter winds on day 3, she dropped the ranks slightly to finish 8th girl, 6th U16 and 31st open in a field of 77 boats.

Her next stop was the Laser 4.7 Europeans Championships in Moss, Norway, where after struggling in light winds for the first three days she came into her own as the wind started to blow over 25 knots, placing her in the top 10 results. Unfortunately, Zofia then suffered an injury and was land bound for the last two days of the competition. Despite this she still finished 31st in the silver group and 33rd U16 girl out of 95 boats representing 22 countries.

Her next event took her to Puck, Poland, for the Polish Youth Championships, which was to be Zofia’s last race in Laser 4.7. After mixed results she finished 18th.

After a two week break, she took part in the Polish Laser Junior Championships in a Laser Radial. This was her first experience in this new class and she finished a very promising 8th overall and 4th U17 girl.
