Cornwallis is named in honour of the eponymous Admiral, Sir William, who took part in several decisive battles, including the capture of Louisburg in 1758 when he was aged just 14. He was a friend of Lord Nelson and served as commander-in-chief of the Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars.

Today, Cornwallis is a house for day boys and girls in Years 8 to 12. It has areas for study, common rooms, lockable storage for books and games kit and changing facilities. There is a kitchen stocked with basic supplies (milk, fruit, bread, butter, tea, and coffee) and a Tuck Shop. The facilities are of the highest standard and specific to the needs of day pupils. The Housemaster, the House Matron, and a dedicated team of tutors provide excellent pastoral care and academic guidance.

From the Housemaster of Cornwallis

Achievements follow when you nurture a child’s confidence. The Cornwallis approach to striving for academic excellence is complemented by a dedication to developing a wide variety of other interests, helping to build aspirations, and instilling a sense of achievement that equips our pupils to face the future with confidence.

With support from our wonderful Matron and House Duty Staff, we provide a safe, happy, and inclusive environment that enables all pupils to meet their potential. We have around eighty boys and girls, each of whom has a Personal Tutor who meets with them in groups every week and individually at least once weekly. There is always an adult presence in the House during the day.

Our pupils quickly discover that there are a great many House events throughout the year, including charity fundraising activities, socials, and inter-House competitions. Cornwallis is the hub of life at RHS for its members who have exactly the same access to our outstanding facilities as the boarders; the only difference is that our pupils head home at the end of the day.

Cornwallis is vertically integrated into a family-style unit, with our Year 8 pupils mixing with the Lower Sixth (Year 12) and every year group in between.

Our House ethos, articulated through our motto, “Learn to Serve”, is based on trusting and respecting each other. We aim to provide a relaxed and friendly environment in which everyone can learn and develop at the pace that best suits them. Boys and girls are expected to be considerate and tolerant towards others and are encouraged to develop some independence when it comes to making decisions about when to work (outside of set prep times) and what other activities to do.

I am in my seventh year as Housemaster of Cornwallis, following a year as its Resident Assistant, and I have whole school responsibilities as an Assistant Designated Safeguarding Lead. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Durham University, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Buckingham, and coaching qualifications in a number of sports. I am currently undertaking a course in educational leadership and management that will lead to a Master of Education degree. I joined RHS as Head of Cricket in January 2016 after teaching in the maintained sector. I teach Business Studies, academic PE, and games.

Please make an appointment to visit Cornwallis House so you may gain a true feel for our community. I very much look forward to welcoming you.
