Report given at the end of term assembly by Mr Nick Platt, Director of Sport and our Sport Captains.
HOCKEY
Hockey is the main sport played in the Michaelmas term for girls and in the Lent term for boys. We regularly field A, B and C teams in most age groups and play on a strong circuit with block fixtures taking place every week. In Year 9 and above, pupils who are involved in the hockey programme take part in a timetabled sports afternoon, alongside an after-school practice. In Years 7 and 8, there are two timetabled hockey sessions. In addition, there are various opportunities for extra training as well as hockey masterclasses in the ‘off season’. Overseas tours are also offered as pupils progress through the school.
Our floodlit Astroturf pitch was resurfaced in 2020. A new viewing platform was also built to ensure a much improved spectator facility. We are fortunate to have some excellent and well-qualified hockey coaches on the staff, with their expert advice enhancing the experience and success of our teams by ensuring specific training for our outfield players and goalkeepers.
We have strong links with many hockey clubs in the region, with pupils involved in many of the age grade county development and academy centres. We enter the County Schools’ tournaments at every age group and recently progressed to the regional stage at U16 and U18 age groups. Pupils also participate in the county indoor tournaments in the Michaelmas term.
