Model United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations, in which pupils play the role of UN Member States to debate current issues. Serving as 'Distinguished Representatives of their state, they prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts and navigate the UN's rules of procedure in the interest of mobilising international cooperation to resolve multi-national problems.

We practise this programme in School and also get involved in MUN conferences with other schools.

MUN is an opportunity for pupils to meet people of their own age with similar interests from a variety of top schools. It is a great way for pupils to build their confidence, as they are meeting new people and having to learn how to build relationships with them quickly in a new environment. Pupils learn how to speak in public and improve their negotiation skills. Although this sounds like an intimidating experience, pupils find this a good way for them to gain these skills, as they are with a group of people who are in a similar situation.

MUN also helps pupils to develop a knowledge and understanding of the UN and its respective member states. By taking on the role of delegates of countries, they can write and debate formal resolutions on a wide variety of international topics. Involvement in MUN can help them to become informed global citizens, as they learn about civics, world current affairs, effective communication, globalization and multi-lateral diplomacy.

We have over 70 pupils regularly involved in MUN, including some in Years 7 and 8. We have our own practice debates to get pupils ready for conferences and to build their confidence. We also have an annual MUN Dinner on Remembrance Sunday, with a special guest speaker.
