The school, lying between the River Stour and Alton Water Reservoir, has a unique seafaring heritage. Consequently, sailing is a popular games option and thriving sport with a fleet of Lasers, Fevas and 29ers and, for the beginners, Toppers and Optimists. Windsurfing is a more recent additon.

All pupils joining the School at Year 7 are taken out of lessons for a week during thier first term to receive sailing instruction. For many this is their first taste of the sport but for others it is a chance to consolidate what they have learnt and gain RYA certificates. Enthusiasts are able to sail three or four times a week and progress to the highest level.
There are regular opportunities to spend weekends afloat in the schools flotilla of Cornish Shrimpers. This "Swallows and Amazons" experience is popular through the spring and summer months and expeditions in the holidays and weekends are held as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
